Global Wildfire Awareness Week - Proclamation
The weeks of May 1–7 (northern hemisphere) and October 1–7 (southern hemisphere) are to be recognized as the time for actively sharing wildfire prevention information with the world. Many areas around the world have experienced an increase in the frequency and severity of large uncontrollable wildfires, putting life and property at increased risk. Informed action ensures that we as society will lessen the causes and effects of unwanted wildfire. The Global Wildfire Awareness Week will reflect on those most affected by wildfire and will share their stories, experiences and lessons learned. Wildfire prevention is a shared responsibility.
The International Association of Wildland Fire (IAWF), whose mission is to foster leadership and communication for the wildland fire community, is invigorating its commitment to wildfire prevention around the globe through this bi-annual campaign. Our vision is a global society that is not only vigilant but also knowledgeable on how to live in fire-prone environments. We ask for your participation, not only through this week, but throughout the year.
As we pursue measures to safeguard our families, property and fellow firefighters, we must remember that we are an innovative, resourceful, and productive society. The strategies for reducing the number of unwanted wildfires may differ by region, but these strategies, when actively applied, work to make a safer environment for all. To help make informed decisions and to prepare for the upcoming wildfire season, we are asking entities from around the globe to participate by signing the IAWF Proclamation supporting Global Wildfire Awareness Week.
Together, we commit to reach out locally and globally in the name of wildfire prevention. In observance thereof, I urge all citizens to join in this special observance.
